Computer Vision Syndrome
Computer Vision Syndrome is a real. If you stare at a screen too long without taking a break, your eyes can get tired and dry which in some cases effects your vision. On average according to Time.com, we spend eleven hours a day staring at a screen (iPhone, computer, etc..) We need technology to get through the day, but how do we stop our eyes from getting tired.
One of the most recommended ways to help your eyes, is the 20-20-20 rule. Optometrists say that for every 20 minutes you are staring at a screen, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Doctor Justin Macklin said, "Staring at devices, it stresses the eye focusing system and the eye kind of adapts to that and the eye kind of changes shape to almost specialize in near vision in a sense." There is no research that says your prescription changes more frequently because of technology and screen use, but Dr. Macklin has seen consistencies in the his patients with prescription changes regarding distance and those with more screen use.
For kids especially, Dr. Macklin said, "Listen to your children, if they complain of headaches if you see them squinting, if you see them getting really really close to the TV or always bringing them close those are signs they may need to come in to look for glasses."
It's a reminder for everyone to rest your eyes and make sure you get regular checkups. The right prescription will help reduce eye stress and possible computer vision syndrome.
